19th Century Large Automaton Squirrel Cage
Our Squirrel cage is one of the best we have seen in a long time with its own work out wheel and automata which, when the Squirrel has a work out moves the men on top who then saw a log in half.
Late 19th/Early 20th Century, Squirrel cage, or Hamster cage, or Ferret cage, but most likely Squirrel cage as the Victorians were just mad about keeping Squirrels.
As Jane Loudon, writing in Domestic Pets, Their Habits and Management (1851) noted "squirrels were best kept "in little ornamental kennels..."
And C. Pridham remarked in Domestic Pets, Their Habits and Treatments (1893), “It does seem strange that such a shy, wild-wood creature should ever submit to be made a pet, still more that it should quickly become so very much at home as one generally finds pet squirrels are, with such fond, winning, playful ways of their own that we cannot choose but to give them the petting in which they take such delight.”
64cm in height, 74cm long and weighing 12.80kg this is the perfect epitome of Folk art.
Probably American, this piece has been cleaned and restored (a waterwheel piece replaced, base stabilized) with its original paint intact as you can see in their video.
And yes...you do see pink!
