Spencer Heath And George Ltd Exercise Bike
A piece of history with unparalleled credentials, this rare Spencer, Heath & George Ltd Exercise Bike hails from the company that designed and supplied gymnasium equipment to iconic vessels like the Titanic, The Queen Mary, and Aquitania, as well as the first gyms and rehabilitation centres.
Notably, their equipment was used as exercise and recuperation aids for returning servicemen in and after World War 1.
They made "medico-mechanical" equipment between 1900 & 1950, this bike being from their earlier years, and it looks like this was made for women as it has stamped into one handle "John Bull Ladies Sports”.
In what looks like its original paint, the bike is fully functional having undergone careful cleaning to ensure its continued operation, although at its age it is decorative and we would not advise using it.
Standing at 104 cm high, with a depth of approximately 32.5 cm and a base width of 127 cm, this exercise bike is a testament to early "medico-mechanical" equipment.
Adjustable features include the cast iron flywheel, handlebars, and saddle, provided its users with a customizable workout experience.
The entire assembly is anchored to a robust wood base, proudly displaying the Spencer, Heath & George Ltd metal trade label.
While the riders who may have used it remain a matter of speculation, this exercise bike is undoubtedly a rare and important piece with direct lineage to contemporary fitness equipment.
Its museum-quality, historical significance, and to us today, Heath Robinsonesque whimsical appearance make it a truly remarkable documentary artifact.
