19th Century Noah's Ark On Wall Hanging Display, 48 Figures (brown roof)

£500.00

This whole set and ark are presented on this custom made display with Mr & Mrs Noah and two of their children (4 human figures ) plus 22 pairs of animals (44 animals), making 48 figures in all, 5 of which have damaged legs.
There is some chipping and overall wear.
This ark is late 19th century, early 20th century and made in Germany.
These flat bottomed arks were made in the Erzgebirge area which is particularly known for this design, but unfortunately it has no makers mark.
It was very much a cottage industry where father would make the pieces, mother would make sure the glue pots were ready and assembled the pieces, while children, as young as seven, painted them.
They were then shipped by wholesalers around the world to Victorian/Edwardian families and their strict adherence to the Sabbath, where in "most" houses these would only be allowed to be played with on Sunday.
But of course another attraction was the fact that children had never seen some of these animals before, they were intriguing and exotic.
All the pieces are held on with removable glue dots for easy removal.
The whole piece measures 58.5 cm x 34.5 cm
