Botanical Model, Ravenala Madagascariensis, The Travellers Palm
A Large Wood Travellers Palm Botanical Teaching Model
This is a fabulous specimen in oh so many ways, the Travellers Palm, or Ravenala Madagascariensis, is imposing whether the real thing or this wood botanical teaching aid.
Why the travellers palm, well because in real life the sheaths of the stems hold rainwater, which they say can be used as an emergency drinking supply for travellers.
Found all over Madagascar it loves humidity and can also be found in Hawaii, Kinshasa, Cambodia and many more countries.
This great representation is made of wood and all the "leaves" are detachable, apart from the very top one which has been restored a few times in the past, we have had it secured, as we have with an old crack on the base which has been painted over at some time.
Circa 1930's it has small numbered paper labels on each stalk and possibly made in the Philippines.
The colours are beautifully hand painted.
The real life specimen grows to 23 feet, this one however is around 100cm.
This is an uncommon, beautiful piece, and completely out of the ordinary.
