19th Century Wood "Sailor" Sculpture On Plinth
19th Century Polychrome Man of the Sea.
We actually have no idea where this man came from we just loved him from first seeing him.
We heard that he could potentially represent a whaler or seaman of that period because of his hat.
It look's like he has been holding something, a rope, flag, whaling lance? with one straight arm and one bent arm....something very thin between his fingers so it couldn't be a gun or thick bill hook.
We were told he probably held a lance rather than a harpoon, but we have also seen similar figures holding rope.
Unless you can find us a time machine then we cannot provenance all of this, but it is more than likely that he stood in the window of a fishery/whaling shop or offices with a rope or lance in his hands as a promotion of "this is what we sell" "this is what we do" in all his polychrome glory, he would have been painted beautifully.
Our man has been conserved by a professional conservationist.
We have stood him on a vintage wood barley twist pedestal
He stands, without the pedestal, approx. 68.5 cm tall and the full piece from the bottom of the pedestal to his Tar (Jack Tar) hat....they actually painted their hats with tar to keep them dry!.... is 137 cm.
